“The recent DDoS attacks that hit several Dutch banks appear to be boyish pranks. You can actually defend yourself really well against these kinds of attacks.”

Jeroen van Glabbeek, CEO of CM Groep, is incomprehensible in his reaction to the DDoS attacks in Deloitte’s Mid Market Monitor 2013 on the expectations of future cybercrime. The rapport is an annual conclusion after market research by Deloitte. It shows activities and the market climate on internationalization, innovation, cybercrime and reflects current trends and opinions.

“Anyone with a slight intelligence in IT or networks can by himself perform these kinds of cyber attacks”, states Van Glabbeek. “It’s a matter of setting right the most essential parameters in networks.” Pranks or not, the attacks paralyzed online payments several straight hours in multiple events. “As long as the attacks are noticed, there is really not much going on. The real threat comes from the attacks that remain under the surface.”

CM Groep as well dealt with hackers and cyber attacks. “Our network is constantly being searched by automated systems for weak spots like open network ports. But that is not the biggest issue.” According to Dick Berlijn, senior member of the board at Deloitte, the awareness of possible threats among companies is missing. He advises: “If you’re feeling insecure about the company capabilities of securing your network systems, seek help to do so.”
